Critter Camp
Critter Camp ran for the first time during August 2009. Critter Camp was an initiative between ESRM, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and the Carnarvon School of the Air. The camp was designed to give school children based on remote properties an opportunity to study local fauna and participate in various activities as well as providing a rare opportunity for distance education students, and their parents, a chance to catch up and meet face to face.
The School of the Air curriculum has a strong focus on science and the camp aimed to provide a practical aspect to the students education. Activities during the camp included:
- Animal trapping and tracking
- Plant and animal identification
- Art class
- Solar system and stargazing activities
- Song writing and performance
23 students ranging in age from 7 to 12 arrived at Muggon homestead near Murchison settlement, a Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) owned property, and spent 3 days learning about the environment that they live in. The participants all live on properties in the Gascoyne and Murchison and are students of the Meekatharra and Carnarvon Schools of the Air.
